THE EVERETT SPRUILL FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS

The Everett Spruill Foundation for the Arts was established as a nonprofit organization in 2008. Everett Spruill is currently President and CEO of the Foundation. The Spruill Foundation has plans for extensive operations in Orlando and to strengthen its administrative infrastructure with professional staff and an engaged Board of Directors, secure new intellectual capital through a distinguished Board of Advisors, formalized its operations, enhance its local and national profile with the realization of numerous ambitious projects and defined programs, goals and plans for the future.The mission of the Foundation is to preserve and perpetuate the legacy of influential American artist of African-American heritage by supporting educational programs, special projects, exhibitions, critical scholarship and seminal publications that deepen the appreciation of and access to the extraordinary art and culture of African Americans. In addition, the Foundation acknowledges the professional and personal encouragement Spruill generously provides other artists, as well as his broad intellectual and scholarly interests, by supporting the creative and intellectual development of up-and-coming African-American artists and scholars.

NEW INITIATIVES

To realize its mission and ambitious programmatic and operational goals, the Foundation will work to increase support and resources from public and private sources. Over several years, the Foundation will incrementally launch and undertake new and/or expanded projects and programs that are tied to its core mission of preserving and perpetuating the work of African American Artists. To join the growing community of supporters who recognize and appreciate the importance of the Foundation’s mission and who value Everett Spruill’s artistic legacy and to support specific programs of interest.

Legacy-Based Programs & Projects  Programs and projects that support scholarship, exhibitions and publications about African American artists and that preserve and make publicly accessible the artwork and personal collection of Everett Spruill.
  • Everett Spruill  Archives

    This rich resource will add substantively to the scholarship on twentieth-century American art and illuminate Spruill’s extraordinary creativity and private art collection. The archives contain correspondence, sketchbooks, awards, photographs, video and unpublished manuscripts. Spruill’s personal art collection of over 1,500 paintings, prints, and collectables reflects the broad range of his artistic and aesthetic interests. The archival materials will be processed and cataloged, with an appropriate environment created for their storage, use and display. 
  • Artwork Preservation

    An ongoing project to preserve the artist extraordinary body of work, including collages, photomontages, watercolors, oils and prints, as they need conservation. 
  • Exhibitions

    National and international exhibitions of Spruill’s artwork in museums and galleries. Small-scale presentations of Spruill’s art from his private collection, as well as artwork by artists influenced by Spruill, exhibited in the Foundation’s art gallery.
  • National Symposium Series

    A national program developed in partnership with and presented at colleges and universities to generate new scholarship on Spruill’s art, life and legacy and inspire fresh ideas and approaches to his work. 
  • The Rayford Gallery - A Program of the Everett Spruill Foundation

    The establishment of key components of the Rayford Gallery as a program of the Foundation. Spruill established the Rayford Gallery in 2008 with relatives of the late Arthur Rayford.
  •  Grant-Giving Programs The Foundation will solicit and provide funds that benefit and support three groups: children, young (emerging) artists and scholars. The focus of the program reflects Spruill’s interest in scholarship both as an artist and entrepreneur, and his lifelong advocacy and support of young and underrepresented African-American artists and the cultural and educational organizations that support them. Structured, competitive programs will award grants, scholarships and stipends that nurture artistic talent as well as support creative and educational aspirations.
 
  • School Programs

    Designed for children in grades K-12, the program will provide long- term support to a select group of students starting in middle school and continuing through high school. Program components include: 1) Grants and stipends to further the education of talented, financially needy art students; and 2) Internships through collaborations with the private sector and art schools to deepen appreciation and exposure to art. 
  • Everett Spruill Curriculum Project

    The development and national distribution of a comprehensive and content-rich curriculum based on key themes from Spruill’s art and life. Curriculum packets with slides, video and collage demonstration guides for teachers will be developed. The project, piloted in Orlando, Florida, will include a school-based teacher-training component and site visits to the Foundation’s art gallery. 
  • National Artists Program

    A competitive scholarship/grant program administered in partnership with universities and colleges nationally to provide talented African- American art students with modest grants to support their artistic development.
  • National Scholars Program

    A national competitive program that provides support for masters or postdoctoral studies to young African-American scholars who aspire to continue their higher education, but are hindered by a lack of financial resources.

THE EVERETT SPRUILL FOUNDATION is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was established in 2008 to preserve and perpetuate the legacy of African American art and artists and to increase public awareness of and appreciation for the arts, with a particular emphasis on the African-American cultural contribution.

What will your contribution be used for?
Contributions to the Foundation will benefit its ongoing efforts to preserve and make publicly accessible its Spruill art and archives collection, to support young and emerging artists, and to present scholarly and public programs focused on Spruill’s contribution to American art.
Your involvement will help to inspire others to join us in supporting the important work of the Foundation. Here are some ways in which you can help support the Spruill Foundation's programs and initiatives and honor the legacy of African American artists. Donations can be for general support or earmarked for a specific program area and are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by current law.

THE EVERETT SPRUILL FOUNDATION PRESIDENTS CLUB! The Everett Spruill Foundation's Presidents Club is a select group of supporters who recognize and appreciate the Foundation's mission and are committed to perpetuating Everett Spruill’s artistic legacy. Membership in the President's Club requires an annual contribution, at a minimum level of $5,000, which entitles you to receive invitations to intimate collectors' events and to receive other exciting and exclusive benefits throughout the year. Along with this annual contribution, a member of the President's Club may wish to contribute materials to the Spruill archives and to support any program area of special interest.
